Marvel Studios delivered one of the biggest surprises of San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) 2026 by officially announcing that Ryan Gosling will play Ghost Rider in an upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie.
The reveal came during Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated Hall H presentation, where Marvel President Kevin Feige welcomed Gosling to the stage alongside director Shawn Levy. The announcement confirmed years of fan speculation and fulfilled Gosling’s long-standing wish to portray the iconic antihero.
Speaking to the Hall H audience, Gosling said:
“This is a character I’ve wanted to play for a long time.”
Fans may remember that Gosling first expressed his interest in Ghost Rider during interviews in 2022. Kevin Feige later responded that Marvel would gladly find the right role if the actor ever joined the MCU. Four years later, that conversation has become reality.
Marvel also confirmed that Shawn Levy will direct the new Ghost Rider film.
Levy previously directed the blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine for Marvel Studios and recently collaborated with Gosling on Star Wars: Starfighter. During the panel, Gosling joked that there was only one filmmaker he wanted to make the movie with before Feige revealed Levy’s name to an enthusiastic Hall H crowd.
Although Marvel did not reveal the complete story, several important details were confirmed:
Marvel has also not confirmed whether Gosling will portray Johnny Blaze, Danny Ketch, or another version of Ghost Rider. However, industry reports and fan expectations strongly point toward Johnny Blaze, the most recognizable incarnation of the Spirit of Vengeance.
Ryan Gosling has established himself as one of Hollywood’s most versatile leading men through films such as Drive, Blade Runner 2049, La La Land, The Nice Guys, and Barbie.
Ghost Rider demands an actor capable of balancing emotional depth with action and supernatural intensity. Gosling’s ability to portray conflicted, layered characters makes him an ideal fit for Marvel’s darker supernatural corner.
His casting also introduces another Oscar-nominated actor into the MCU’s expanding roster.
The announcement immediately became one of the biggest talking points of Comic-Con 2026.
Fans across X, Reddit, Instagram, and YouTube celebrated the news, with many calling it “perfect casting.” Fan art featuring Gosling as Ghost Rider quickly began trending, while Hall H attendees described the reveal as one of the loudest crowd reactions of Marvel’s presentation.
Ghost Rider’s arrival continues Marvel Studios’ expansion into supernatural storytelling.
The MCU has gradually introduced darker characters through projects featuring Doctor Strange, Moon Knight, Werewolf by Night, Blade, and Agatha Harkness. Ghost Rider is expected to play a significant role in this growing supernatural branch of the franchise.
Although Marvel has yet to reveal how Ghost Rider connects to future Avengers stories, the character could become a key figure in upcoming crossover events.
Ghost Rider wasn’t the only surprise during Marvel Studios’ Hall H showcase.
Marvel also revealed:
The event marked Marvel Studios’ biggest Comic-Con presentation in years and signaled an ambitious roadmap for the MCU’s future.
Ryan Gosling’s casting as Ghost Rider is one of the most exciting Marvel announcements in recent memory. After years of rumors and fan campaigns, Marvel Studios has officially confirmed that Gosling will bring the iconic Spirit of Vengeance to the MCU under the direction of Shawn Levy.
While many story details remain a mystery, the announcement alone has generated enormous excitement among Marvel fans.
